What Does Born in Roma Intense Smell Like?
Valentino took the original Born in Roma — which was already a pretty sweet vanilla fragrance — and basically said "what if we made it even sweeter and darker?" The result is Born in Roma Intense, and it's a full-on gourmand powerhouse.
The opening hits with a blast of gingerbread-like spice. You get ginger, cinnamon, and a boozy vanilla right away. It smells like walking into a high-end bakery during the holidays, but with a slightly smoky, woody twist that keeps it grounded. There's green tea in the notes list, but honestly, it barely registers — the spice and vanilla completely dominate.
As it develops, smoked Virginia tobacco comes through along with a rich, creamy vanilla. The drydown is all about warm benzoin resin, cedar, and that persistent sweet spice. It's like someone wrapped a vanilla candle in a tobacco leaf and lit it on fire. Cozy, warm, and undeniably sweet.
Performance — Brings the Heat
- Longevity: 8-10 hours
- Projection: Strong for the first 3-4 hours
- Sillage: You'll leave a trail — people will smell you before they see you
The performance is legit. This is one of those fragrances where you spray twice in the morning and you're still catching whiffs at bedtime. The sweetness helps it project, and the tobacco-vanilla base gives it great lasting power on skin and clothes alike.
When to Wear Born in Roma Intense
- Fall and winter — this is the prime time. Cold weather makes the spice and vanilla sing.
- Night out / dates — The sweet, warm profile is a compliment machine.
- Holiday season — It literally smells like Christmas in a bottle.
- DO NOT wear this in summer — The heavy sweetness will be nauseating in heat.
- Iffy for office — Depends on your workplace. Some offices this would be too much.
The Real Downsides
- It's VERY sweet — If you don't like sweet fragrances, turn around now. This is not a fragrance that has "moments" of sweetness. It IS sweetness. The entire thing.
- Similarity to the original — While it's darker and spicier, the DNA is close enough to the original Born in Roma that owning both feels redundant.
- One-dimensional — It smells great, but it doesn't really evolve much over time. What you smell in hour 1 is pretty much what you smell in hour 8. Just quieter.
- Limited seasonal use — Realistically, you're wearing this 4-5 months out of the year. The rest of the time it sits on your shelf.
- Trendy scent profile — Sweet vanilla-tobacco gourmands are everywhere right now. This doesn't stand out from the crowd as much as it should for its price.
Buy or Skip?
Born in Roma Intense is a well-executed cold weather gourmand that does exactly what it promises. If you're shopping for a fall/winter date night fragrance and you love sweet, warm scents, this belongs on your list. The quality is there, the performance is there, and it genuinely smells good.
But it's also not doing anything new. If you already own Spicebomb Extreme, Stronger With You Intensely, or any other sweet-spicy winter fragrance, this might feel like a repeat. It's a solid fragrance in a very crowded category.
Rating: 7/10 — Really enjoyable, great performance, but it lives in a packed field of similar scents. Worth a try if you're into the style, but not essential.
