Afnan's 9 PM line has become the go-to budget recommendation in the fragrance community, and for good reason — the original 9 PM punches way above its price tag. Now they've dropped 9 PM Rebel, and the big question is whether this is just another flanker cash grab or something genuinely different. Spoiler: it's somewhere in the middle.
What Does 9 PM Rebel Smell Like?
The original 9 PM was all about that sweet, boozy, JPG Ultra Male vibe. Rebel takes a darker, smokier turn. Opening up, you get a burst of dark plum and spicy cinnamon that immediately tells you this isn't the same sweet party scent. There's a slight fruity tartness up top that keeps it from going full-on dark and moody.
In the mid, things get interesting. There's a smoky oud note (synthetic, but decent quality for the price) layered with some warm amber. It gives the whole thing a nightclub-at-midnight feel. The dry down lands on a bed of vanilla and musk, but it's way less sweet than the original 9 PM. Think of it as the older brother who traded the party scene for whiskey bars.
Performance
- Longevity: 7-8 hours. Solid but not insane. The original 9 PM actually lasted a bit longer.
- Projection: Moderate. Good for the first 2-3 hours, then pulls in closer.
- Sillage: You'll get noticed but you're not clearing rooms.
For the price point, you really can't complain about the performance. It's competitive with fragrances that cost three or four times as much.
When to Wear 9 PM Rebel
Night time, cooler weather. This is built for going out — bars, clubs, dates, anything after sundown. It works from late fall through winter and into early spring. Summer is a no-go unless you're in heavy AC.
Compared to the original 9 PM, Rebel is slightly more mature and less "college party." If you're over 25 and the original felt a bit young for you, this might be the better pick.
The Downsides
- Generic dark fragrance territory: If you've smelled a lot of oud-amber-vanilla combos in the Middle Eastern market, this won't blow your mind. It's good but not groundbreaking.
- The oud feels synthetic: At this price point it's expected, but some people are sensitive to that rubbery, slightly plasticky oud note. It's not terrible, but it's there.
- Less crowd-pleasing than the original: The original 9 PM was a safe bet that basically everyone liked. Rebel is more polarizing — the smokiness won't land with everyone.
- Longevity dip vs the original: You'd expect the "rebel" version to go harder, but it actually fades a little sooner. Disappointing.
Buy or Skip?
Buy it if you want a darker, more grown-up version of 9 PM and you're on a budget. It's a solid nighttime scent that won't break the bank. Skip it if you already have the original 9 PM plus something smoky in your collection — there's not enough separation to justify both unless you're a collector.
Rating: 7/10
A solid budget option that takes 9 PM in a darker direction, but doesn't quite hit the same "wow" factor the original had at launch.
