Black Afgano by Nasomatto Review — The Dark, Resinous Legend That Divides Everyone

What Does Black Afgano Smell Like?

Black Afgano is one of those fragrances that people either worship or absolutely cannot stand. There is no middle ground. Created by Alessandro Gualtieri for Nasomatto, this is supposed to represent the "addictive quality of black hashish." Yeah, they went there.

The opening is dark, smoky, and intensely resinous. You get an immediate hit of cannabis-like notes — not literally weed, but a deep, herbal, slightly sweet smokiness that's unmistakable. There's coffee in there too, adding a roasted bitterness that cuts through the sweetness.

As it develops, a thick oud note emerges alongside dark resins and what smells like burnt incense. It's heavy, it's brooding, and it fills a room with this dense, almost narcotic cloud. The tobacco note weaves in and out, adding a dry, leathery quality that keeps it from being one-note.

The dry down is where Black Afgano becomes genuinely beautiful. All that darkness settles into a warm, balsamic, slightly sweet base that clings to your skin. It's like the embers of a fire that burned something mysterious. Hours after application, you'll catch whiffs of this warm, smoky-sweet residue and understand why people get addicted to it.

Performance — Nuclear

Black Afgano is an extrait-level concentration, and it performs like one. Two sprays will last 12+ hours easily. The projection is strong for the first 4-5 hours, then it settles into a thick skin scent that just radiates warmth. I've smelled this on clothes days later.

Do NOT over-apply. One or two sprays, max. Three and you'll be that person everyone is talking about — and not in a good way.

When to Wear Black Afgano

  • Cold weather evenings — this is winter royalty
  • Nights out where you want to stand out dramatically
  • Art galleries, concerts, and creative events
  • Anytime you want to feel like the main character in a noir film
  • Personal enjoyment at home — this is a fragrance many people wear just for themselves

The Real Downsides

  • It's polarizing. Some people will smell this and think you smell like an ashtray or a head shop. The cannabis/hashish note is not subtle, and not everyone finds it pleasant.
  • Zero versatility. You cannot wear this to the office. You cannot wear this in summer. You cannot wear this to a family dinner without getting looks. It's a mood fragrance with a very narrow window of appropriate use.
  • The price is brutal. Nasomatto charges serious money for a 30ml bottle with no spray cap (it's a dabber). For the price per ml, this is one of the most expensive fragrances on the market.
  • The bottle is annoying. No spray mechanism means you're dabbing from a 30ml bottle. It's inconvenient, and you have less control over application than you'd like.
  • Can come across as try-hard. There's a certain type of person who wears Black Afgano specifically because it's "edgy" and "controversial." If that's your motivation, people can tell.
  • Nasomatto doesn't disclose notes. The brand refuses to list official notes, which means every description you read is someone's interpretation. You genuinely don't know what you're getting until you smell it.

Buy or Skip?

Black Afgano is a masterpiece — but it's a masterpiece that's not for everyone. If you love dark, smoky, resinous fragrances and you want something that feels genuinely artistic and unique, this deserves a spot in your collection. There's nothing else quite like it.

But sample first. Always, always sample Black Afgano before buying. The gap between loving this and hating it is paper-thin, and at this price, you don't want to be on the wrong side.

Rating: 8/10

A genuinely unique, powerfully crafted dark fragrance that delivers an experience more than a scent. Loses points for the absurd pricing, impractical bottle, and near-zero versatility. But when it works? Nothing else touches it.
