Black Gemstone by Stéphane Humbert Lucas Review — Dark, Smoky, and Underrated

What Does Black Gemstone Smell Like?

Black Gemstone is the kind of fragrance that makes you feel like a villain in a movie — and I mean that as a compliment. This is dark, smoky, resinous stuff. If you're looking for something friendly and approachable, close this tab right now. This ain't it.

The opening hits with a combination of dark oud, incense, and a smoky leather note that immediately sets the mood. It's not sharp or aggressive — it's more like walking into an ancient temple where incense has been burning for centuries. The smoke wraps around you rather than punching you in the face.

As it develops, you get a rich amber and benzoin sweetness underneath all that darkness. This is what keeps Black Gemstone from being unwearable. Without that sweet resinous base, this would be too harsh. But the amber smooths everything out and gives it this deep, glowing warmth. Think of embers in a fireplace — not a roaring fire, but the hot coals that are left after.

The dry down is all oud, musk, and a slightly animalic quality that's primal and compelling. This is not a clean fragrance. It's a dark, raw, "I just came back from a desert monastery" kind of scent. And it's absolutely incredible if you're into that style.

Performance — Is Black Gemstone a Beast?

  • Longevity: 10-12+ hours. This is a monster. You'll smell it on your skin the next morning.
  • Projection: Strong for the first 4-5 hours, then moderate to heavy.
  • Sillage: Heavy. You will announce your presence when you walk into a room.

The performance is insane. Two sprays is all you need — maybe even one depending on the situation. This is the kind of fragrance where overapplication is a real risk. Go easy.

When to Wear Black Gemstone

  • Fall and winter only — this would suffocate in summer heat
  • Evening events where you want to stand out
  • Date nights where you want to make a strong impression
  • Formal occasions with the right outfit
  • Whenever you feel like channeling your inner Bond villain

This is not an everyday fragrance. It's a statement piece. You pull this out when you want people to remember you were in the room. Use it strategically.

The Honest Downsides

  • It's polarizing. Really polarizing. Most people will either love or hate this. There's no in-between. The dark, smoky, slightly animalic profile is not a crowd pleaser. If you spray this at the office, someone will complain.
  • Almost zero versatility. You can't wear this casually. You can't wear this in warm weather. You can't wear this in most professional settings. That means for a lot of the year, it sits on your shelf.
  • The oud and smoke can be overwhelming. Even for people who like dark fragrances, Black Gemstone can be "too much." Two sprays can fill a room. If you're not careful with application, you'll clear the room.
  • Not a compliment getter in the traditional sense. People will notice you, but the comments might be "whoa, what is that?" rather than "you smell amazing." It's a divisive scent that not everyone appreciates.
  • The brand is unknown to most people. Unlike wearing Tom Ford or Louis Vuitton, nobody's going to recognize the SHL name. If brand recognition matters to you (it shouldn't, but let's be real), this won't impress people who only know mainstream brands.

Buy or Skip?

Black Gemstone is a fragrance for people who already know they love dark, oud-heavy, incense-forward scents. If you've worn and loved Ombre Nomade, Oud for Greatness, or God of Fire, Black Gemstone should be on your radar. It's a serious, well-made, powerful fragrance that has genuine artistry behind it.

But if you're looking for your first niche fragrance, or something versatile, or a crowd pleaser — skip it. This is an advanced collector's piece. It's meant for the person who has 20+ fragrances and wants something that hits differently from everything else in their collection.

Rating: 7.5/10

A beautifully crafted dark fragrance with monster performance, held back by extreme polarization and near-zero versatility. If it's your style, it's a 9. If it's not, it's a 4. The score reflects the middle ground.
