What Does Bleu de Chanel L'Exclusif Smell Like?
Chanel already had three versions of Bleu de Chanel — EDT, EDP, and Parfum — and apparently decided the world needed a fourth. L'Exclusif Parfum is the darkest, richest, and most intense version yet. But is "more intense Bleu de Chanel" something anyone was actually asking for?
The opening is recognizably Bleu de Chanel, but it's been turned up and slightly tweaked. That citrus-mint freshness you know from the original is still there, but it's wrapped in something darker. There's an immediate woody depth that the other versions don't have. It feels more brooding right from the first spray.
The heart is where L'Exclusif separates itself. There's a rich, almost smoky incense note layered with cedar and sandalwood. The jasmine is darker here, less bright. If regular Bleu de Chanel is a guy in a crisp blue suit, L'Exclusif is the same guy at midnight with the tie loosened and a whiskey in hand.
The dry down is incredible — deep sandalwood, amber, and a vetiver-moss base that feels almost vintage in its richness. It's warm and enveloping without being sweet. This is where L'Exclusif really earns its name. The base lasts and lasts and just smells... expensive.
Performance — The Big Question
- Longevity: 10-12+ hours — this is an absolute marathon runner
- Projection: Moderate but persistent — it doesn't scream, it commands
- Sillage: Close to moderate — people need to be nearish, but when they catch it, they notice
The longevity on this is bonkers. You'll spray it in the morning and still smell it on your skin before bed. The projection isn't massive — it's more of a personal fragrance bubble — but the quality of what projects is top-tier.
When Should You Wear L'Exclusif?
- Fall and winter are ideal — the depth shines in cool weather
- Evening events, dinners, dates
- Actually works year-round because the freshness is still there
- Office-appropriate if you go easy on sprays (2-3 max)
The beauty of L'Exclusif is that it inherited enough freshness from the BDC DNA to not be purely a cold-weather scent. You can get away with this in spring. Summer might be pushing it unless you're in air conditioning all day.
The Real Problems
- The price is painful. This is significantly more expensive than the regular Parfum, which was already expensive. You're paying a serious premium for what is essentially a darker version of a fragrance you might already own.
- It's still Bleu de Chanel. If you were hoping for something radically different, you'll be disappointed. The DNA is the same. It's been deepened and intensified, but it's not a new fragrance — it's a remix.
- Close projection might bother some people. For the price, some guys want a fragrance that fills a room. L'Exclusif prefers to stay closer to the skin.
- Redundant if you own BDC Parfum. The difference between the regular Parfum and L'Exclusif, while noticeable, isn't massive. If you already have the Parfum, this might feel like you're buying the same thing twice.
Buy or Skip?
Here's the honest truth: L'Exclusif is the best version of Bleu de Chanel. Period. The depth, the longevity, the quality of the dry down — it's all superior. But whether that's worth the significant price jump over the regular Parfum is a personal call.
If you're buying your first Bleu de Chanel, sure, go for L'Exclusif if your budget allows. But if you already own the Parfum and love it, you really need to sample this first before committing. The differences are real but subtle.
Buy if: You want the absolute best version of BDC and budget isn't a concern.
Skip if: You already own BDC Parfum and are happy with it.
Rating: 8.5/10
The best Bleu de Chanel ever made. Rich, deep, long-lasting, and endlessly classy. Knocked down slightly for the price and the fact that it's still fundamentally the same fragrance DNA.
