City Rhythm Austin Extrait. If their Miami line is all about tropical beach energy, Austin is the complete opposite — leather, wood, warmth, and character. This is City Rhythm channeling the spirit of Texas, and honestly? They nailed the vibe. Let's break it down.
What Does Austin Smell Like?
The opening hits you with this warm, slightly spicy, aromatic quality. There's leather right from the start — not the harsh, chemical leather that some fragrances have, but a soft, worn-in leather. Think your favorite leather jacket that's been broken in over years. Mixed with that is a subtle smokiness and something herbal, almost like sage or dry desert air.
The heart develops into this beautiful combination of warm woods and a boozy, slightly sweet quality — bourbon comes to mind. There's tobacco in there too, adding richness and depth without making it smell like an ashtray. It's refined, atmospheric, and genuinely evocative. You can almost hear live music in the background when you smell this.
The dry down settles into smooth woods, vanilla, and musk with that leather still weaving through everything. It's comforting and masculine without being aggressive. It's the kind of scent that makes you want to sit on a porch at sunset with a drink in your hand.
Performance
Excellent. Extrait concentration does its thing here — 10-12 hours, strong projection for 5-6 hours, then a gorgeous skin scent for the rest. The woody, leathery notes have natural longevity, so this just sticks to your skin beautifully.
Two sprays is plenty. Maybe three if you're going out and want to project a bit more.
When To Wear Austin
Fall. Winter. Cool evenings. This is a cold weather fragrance that comes alive when temperatures drop below 65 degrees. Date nights, dinners, concerts, casual evenings out — Austin has that effortlessly cool energy that works in relaxed social settings.
Office? Possible with one spray, but the leather and smokiness might be a lot for a corporate environment. Use your judgment.
This leans masculine but isn't exclusively so. Women who enjoy leather and woody fragrances will rock this too.
The Downsides
Austin is a niche fragrance in every sense — niche brand, niche scent profile. If you're used to crowd-pleasing designers, this is going to feel DIFFERENT. Not everyone in your circle will love it. Your friends who wear Sauvage might look at you funny.
The leather note, while beautifully done, is polarizing. Some people just don't like leather in fragrances, period. If that's you, nothing about Austin's execution will change your mind.
It's also very much a mood fragrance. You can't throw this on any random day and expect it to work. It needs the right setting, the right weather, the right energy. That limits how often you'll realistically reach for it.
And the Texas/Western theme might feel gimmicky to some. I think City Rhythm handled it tastefully, but I can see critics arguing it's more marketing than substance.
Buy or Skip?
Buy if you love leather fragrances, warm woody scents, or you want something that genuinely captures a specific energy and place. Austin is one of the more evocative fragrances I've worn from any brand.
Skip if leather isn't your thing, you need daily versatility, or you prefer fresh/clean scents. Austin is unapologetically warm, masculine, and specific.
Rating: 7.5/10
Austin is a well-crafted, atmospheric fragrance that delivers on its concept beautifully. The leather-bourbon-wood combination is executed with real skill. It loses points for limited versatility and being a tough sell for anyone who doesn't already lean toward this style. But for the right person? This is a gem.
