Oud Minérale might be the most underrated — and misunderstood — fragrance in the entire Tom Ford Private Blend lineup. This is not your typical oud fragrance. It is not dark, it is not smoky, and it is definitely not what you expect when you see "oud" on the label. Instead, Tom Ford took oud to the beach. Yeah, you read that right. Oud at the beach. And somehow it works.
What Does Oud Minérale Smell Like?
The opening is a trip. You get this blast of salty mineral air mixed with aquatic notes that immediately make you think of the ocean. But not the fresh, clean, blue fragrance version of the ocean — more like standing on a rocky coastline where you can smell the seaweed and feel the salt spray on your face. There is a subtle citrus note that brightens things up, but the dominant character is salty and mineral.
Then the oud starts creeping in. And this is where things get weird — in a good way. The oud here is not the barnyard, funky oud you might be used to. It is this ethereal, almost transparent oud note that blends with the aquatic minerals to create something genuinely unique. Imagine oud wood that has been sitting in a tide pool for a hundred years. That is the vibe.
The dry down brings in seaweed (yes, actual seaweed notes), a subtle smoky quality, and this beautiful mineral musk that ties everything together. It is atmospheric in a way that very few fragrances achieve. You do not smell like you are wearing perfume — you smell like a place. A specific, moody, beautiful place.
Performance
Here is where Oud Minérale stumbles. The longevity is around 5-6 hours, which for a Tom Ford Private Blend EDP at this price is disappointing. Projection is moderate for the first hour and then becomes a very close skin scent. You are basically wearing this for yourself after the 2-hour mark.
This is genuinely my biggest complaint. For the money you are spending, you deserve better performance. Three to four sprays is recommended, and even then, do not expect people across the room to notice.
When to Wear It
Summer. That is really the primary season for this one. Beach days, coastal trips, warm evenings by the water. It also works surprisingly well in spring. The aquatic mineral character just makes sense when the weather is warm and you are outdoors.
This is a contemplative fragrance, not a social one. Wear it for yourself when you want to feel a certain way. It is not a compliment-getter, but it is an experience.
The Honest Downsides
The performance is legitimately bad for the price. I cannot stress this enough. You are paying top dollar for a fragrance that lasts half as long as it should. That alone makes it hard to recommend over similarly priced options.
The scent itself is also extremely niche in its appeal. If you hand this to ten random people, seven of them will probably say it smells weird. The salty, mineral, seaweed character is an acquired taste. This is not crowd-pleasing territory at all.
Tom Ford also discontinued this fragrance and brought it back, which tells you something about its commercial performance. It is a cult favorite, not a mainstream hit, and the price does not reflect that niche appeal.
Lastly, the oud note here is so subtle that oud lovers might feel cheated. If you are buying this expecting a traditional oud experience, you will be disappointed. This is oud in name more than in practice.
Buy or Skip?
This is a skip for most people and a buy for a very specific type of fragrance lover. If you appreciate atmospheric, unusual, artistic fragrances and you do not care about performance or compliments, Oud Minérale is genuinely special. It does something that almost no other fragrance does.
But if you want value for money, good performance, or something that people will actually notice and compliment, look elsewhere.
Rating: 6.5/10
Creatively brilliant but practically frustrating. The scent itself is a work of art — unique, evocative, and beautifully crafted. But the poor performance and extremely niche appeal make it hard to justify the Tom Ford price tag for most buyers. A masterpiece that is hard to recommend.
