The original Phantom was divisive. That robot-shaped bottle got all the attention, and the scent inside — a lavender-vanilla-lemon combo — was either "weirdly addictive" or "smells like cleaning products" depending on who you asked. It was futuristic and polarizing, which is probably exactly what Paco Rabanne wanted.
Phantom Intense takes the DNA and cranks up the volume. More sweetness, more depth, more everything. Did the robot upgrade to a better version? Let's find out.
What Does Phantom Intense Smell Like?
The opening is immediately sweeter and darker than the original. You still get that lemon and lavender combo, but it's been dialed back in favor of a rich, creamy vanilla and what smells like dark caramel. There's a smoky quality too — almost like burnt sugar — that gives the opening an addictive, slightly edgy character.
The heart is where Phantom Intense hits its stride. A thick, gourmand blend of vanilla, tonka bean, and a subtle coffee-like bitterness creates this "dark dessert" vibe. It's sweet but not innocent — think of it as a fragrance that would pair perfectly with a late-night espresso martini. There's also an aromatic element, probably the lavender carrying over from the original DNA, that adds just enough freshness to keep it from being a straight gourmand bomb.
The dry down is warm, musky, and incredibly smooth. Sandalwood and amber create a cozy, enveloping base that lasts for hours. It settles into this gorgeous skin scent that's both masculine and approachable — the kind of thing where someone hugs you and just stays there a little longer.
Performance — How Long Does It Last?
This is a big step up from the original Phantom. You're getting 8-10 hours, with solid projection for the first 4-5 hours. The original Phantom was notoriously average in performance, so the Intense concentration actually fixes one of the biggest complaints about the line.
Two to three sprays hits the sweet spot. The sweetness can stack quickly, so start conservative and add if needed.
When Should You Wear This?
Fall and winter, primarily evenings. The dark sweetness and warmth need cooler temperatures to really shine. This is a date night fragrance, a club night option, or a "going out with friends on a Friday" kind of scent.
Can you wear it to work? During cooler months, one spray might work in a casual office. But in any formal or warm environment, it's going to be too sweet and too present. Keep it for after-hours.
The Downsides — The Honest Truth
The sweetness. It's a lot. If you're not into sweet, gourmand-style masculine fragrances, Phantom Intense will be way too much. It makes the original Phantom smell fresh by comparison, which tells you something about the sugar content here.
It also treads extremely close to other sweet men's fragrances on the market. JPG Le Male Elixir, Spicebomb Extreme, even the Valentino Born in Roma flankers — Phantom Intense is playing in a crowded space and doesn't differentiate itself as much as the original Phantom did (love it or hate it, the original was at least unique).
The bottle. Look, I have to mention it. It's a robot. A chunky, silver robot that takes up a lot of shelf space and looks like a toy from a sci-fi movie. Some guys think it's cool. Others (myself included) think it's a lot. But hey, it's the juice that matters.
And speaking of juice — the opening 10-15 minutes can be a bit harsh and synthetic before it settles. Give it time to develop before judging. The dry down is significantly better than the first impressions.
Buy or Skip?
Buy if you love sweet, warm fragrances and you want something with better performance than the original Phantom. If you're in the 18-30 demographic and you like going out on weekends, Phantom Intense is going to serve you well. It's crowd-pleasing in the right settings.
Skip if you already own multiple sweet winter fragrances. Phantom Intense is good but not different enough to justify itself if you've already got Le Male Elixir or Spicebomb Extreme in the collection. Also skip if sweet fragrances aren't your thing — this isn't going to convert you.
Rating: 7/10
Phantom Intense is a solid improvement over the original, with better performance and a more appealing scent profile. The dark, sweet, vanilla-forward character is well-executed and crowd-pleasing. But in an oversaturated sweet men's fragrance market, it needs to work harder to stand out, and it doesn't quite get there.
