Penhaligon's Changing Constance EDP Review — The Floral Chameleon That Keeps You Guessing

Changing Constance EDP by Penhaligon's

Changing Constance from Penhaligon's Portraits collection tells the story of a woman who's constantly reinventing herself — and the fragrance actually does the same thing on skin. This is one of those scents that smells different every time you check in on it throughout the day, which is either fascinating or frustrating depending on what kind of fragrance person you are.

What Does Changing Constance Smell Like?

The opening is bright and fizzy — green apple and pear create this effervescent, almost champagne-like freshness. There's a touch of pink pepper that adds a subtle bite. It feels playful and modern, nothing like what you'd expect from a heritage British house.

Here's where Constance starts earning her name. Within about 30 minutes, the fruity freshness gives way to a gorgeous white floral heart. Turkish rose and jasmine bloom beautifully, but they're done in this modern, clean way rather than the heavy, old-fashioned floral you might expect from Penhaligon's. There's a slight creamy quality here that keeps it feeling luxurious.

The dry down is the most dramatic shift. All that bright, floral energy settles into a warm, musky base with vanilla, sandalwood, and a hint of patchouli. By hour 5 or 6, Changing Constance smells like a completely different fragrance — warm, sensual, and intimate. It's genuinely impressive how much evolution happens on skin.

Performance

Longevity is decent at 6-8 hours. Projection is moderate in the opening and diminishes to a close skin scent in the dry down. The fruity-floral phase projects the most, while the warm base phase becomes very intimate. It's the kind of fragrance that draws people in close rather than announcing your arrival.

When to Wear It

Spring and early fall are perfect for Changing Constance. The fruity opening works in warmth, and the warm dry down works as temperatures cool in the evening. It's a great transitional season fragrance. Date nights, brunches, garden parties, evening dinners — Constance has the versatility to work across multiple settings.

It leans feminine but isn't exclusively so. Guys who are comfortable wearing florals could absolutely pull this off, especially in the dry down phase.

The Downsides

The constant evolution can be a double-edged sword. If you fell in love with the fruity opening at the counter, you might be surprised when it turns into a warm vanilla scent three hours later. You need to wear this for a full day before committing, because what you spray is NOT what you'll smell like later.

The projection could be stronger, especially for the price point. For what Penhaligon's charges, I want more sillage.

The green apple opening can come across a bit synthetic to some noses. It's not bad, but it doesn't feel as natural as the rose and jasmine heart.

Buy or Skip?

Buy if you love fragrances that tell a story on skin and you enjoy discovering new facets throughout the day. Changing Constance is genuinely interesting and never boring.

Skip if you want a linear fragrance that smells the same from spray to skin. Also skip if you need beast mode projection — that's not Constance's game.

Final Rating: 7/10

Changing Constance is clever, well-crafted, and genuinely unique in how much it evolves on skin. The concept matches the execution perfectly — the fragrance really does change throughout the day. It loses points on projection and the slightly synthetic opening, but the heart and dry down are beautiful. A great choice for someone who appreciates fragrance as an art form rather than just a scent to spray and forget.
