Missing Person by Phlur went viral on TikTok for a reason. People kept saying it smells like "the person you miss" or "someone you used to love." And I know that sounds like marketing fluff, but... they're not wrong. This fragrance hits different.
What Does It Smell Like?
Here's the thing about Missing Person — it doesn't really smell like a traditional perfume. There's no big opening, no dramatic reveal. It smells like clean, warm skin. Like you just got out of the shower, moisturized with something really nice, and your natural scent just... elevated.
The top has a subtle bergamot and neroli that barely registers as "fragrance." It immediately melts into this creamy, musky, slightly sweet skin accord. There's jasmine in there but it's not a floral bomb — it's barely-there jasmine, the kind that just adds softness.
The base is all musks. Soft, clean, enveloping musks that just hug your skin. If you've ever buried your face in someone's neck and thought "they smell amazing," that's Missing Person.
Performance — The Elephant in the Room
Let me be honest: the performance is not great. We're talking 3-4 hours of noticeable scent, and even during those hours, the projection is minimal. This is a skin scent from basically minute one. Someone has to be very close to you — hugging distance — to smell it.
Is that a dealbreaker? Depends on what you want. If you're buying this to get compliments across the room, you're going to be disappointed. If you're buying it for intimate moments, for yourself, for that person who gets close enough — then the performance actually works in its favor.
But at $96 for 50ml? The longevity is a valid complaint. No way around it.
When Should You Wear It?
Anytime, honestly. This is one of those rare fragrances that works in every season, every situation. Office? Perfect. Date? Ideal. Casual Saturday? Great. It's so inoffensive and skin-like that nobody will ever think "that's too much."
It's also genuinely unisex. Men, women, non-binary folks — it works on everyone because it basically becomes YOUR skin scent. That's the beauty of it.
The Downsides — And There Are a Few
Performance, obviously. Already covered that. 3-4 hours with minimal projection is rough for the price.
It can also smell a bit "boring" to people who are used to more complex fragrances. If you're coming from Baccarat Rouge 540 or something intense, Missing Person might feel like... nothing. It's subtle by design, but "subtle" and "nonexistent" can feel the same sometimes.
The bottle is also weirdly shaped and doesn't spray great. Minor, but annoying.
Buy or Skip?
If the concept of a "clean skin scent" appeals to you and you don't mind reapplying throughout the day — buy it. Missing Person genuinely captures something emotional that most fragrances don't even attempt. It's comfort in a bottle.
If you need longevity and projection from your fragrances, skip this. You'll be frustrated.
Rating: 7/10
A beautiful concept executed really well, held back by underwhelming performance. The scent itself is a 9, the longevity is a 5. Meet in the middle.
