Polo Blue EDT by Ralph Lauren Review — The Clean-Cut Classic That Still Works

Polo Blue EDT by Ralph Lauren

Polo Blue has been around since 2003, and somehow it's still a staple at every department store counter. While the fragrance world has moved on to louder, sweeter, more extreme scents, Polo Blue just keeps doing its thing. Is that a good thing or has the world passed it by? Let's find out.

What Does Polo Blue EDT Smell Like?

Opening spray gives you a clean, melon-cucumber freshness with a hint of basil. It's incredibly inoffensive — like stepping out of the shower after using a really nice body wash. There's a watery, slightly sweet quality that screams "clean guy who has his life together."

The heart introduces some light suede and sage, adding a subtle warmth that prevents it from being just another fresh-clean fragrance. It's this gentle masculinity that keeps things interesting without ever being challenging.

Drydown is a soft, woody musk that sits close to the skin. It's comfortable, familiar, and about as offensive as a glass of water. In the best way possible. This is the definition of a "safe" fragrance.

Performance — How Long Does It Last?

Average at best. You're getting 5-6 hours, with projection dying down to a skin scent after about 2 hours. For an EDT, this is par for the course, but it's nothing to write home about.

The silver lining? Since it's so inoffensive, you can overspray without worrying about offending anyone. 4-5 sprays is totally fine with this one. Won't help the longevity much, but at least you'll project a bit longer.

When Should You Wear Polo Blue?

This is the ultimate office fragrance. Seriously. If your workplace has a scent policy or you're worried about being "that person" with the strong cologne, Polo Blue is your best friend. It's professional, clean, and completely appropriate for any work environment.

Spring and summer daytime is the sweet spot. Casual outings, business meetings, family events, Sunday brunch — anything where you want to smell good without making it a topic of conversation.

Date night? I'd pass. Unless you're going for a very subtle, "I don't try too hard" vibe, there are way more interesting options for romance. Polo Blue is reliable, not exciting.

The Real Downsides

  • It's boring. There's no way to sugarcoat this. Polo Blue is safe to the point of being forgettable. It smells good, but nobody's going to lose their mind over it.
  • Longevity is mediocre. You'll need to reapply for all-day wear, which is annoying.
  • It smells "department store." If you blind-smelled this, you'd immediately think "mall fragrance counter." That's not always a bad thing, but it lacks character.
  • Way too many flankers. Polo Blue EDP, Parfum, Gold Blend — Ralph Lauren keeps milking this thing. The original EDT feels like the least interesting version at this point.

Buy or Skip?

Buy it if you need a no-drama everyday scent that won't let you down. It's the Honda Civic of fragrances — not flashy, not exciting, but utterly dependable and everyone kind of respects it.

Skip it if you already have something in the clean-fresh-blue category. Bleu de Chanel, Y EDT, Dylan Blue — any of these do a similar job with a bit more personality.

Rating: 6.5/10

Polo Blue is perfectly fine. And that's the highest compliment and biggest criticism you can give it at the same time. It's a solid workhorse fragrance that does exactly what it promises — nothing more, nothing less. In a world of bold flankers and attention-seeking niche releases, there's something honestly refreshing about a fragrance that just wants to be clean and pleasant.
