Santal 33 by Le Labo – The Most Famous Fragrance You'll Either Love or Hate

First Impressions

Let's address the elephant in the room: Santal 33 by Le Labo is probably the most talked-about, most memed, most debated fragrance of the last decade. It's the scent that took over New York City. The one that people joke you can smell in every Soho elevator and every Brooklyn coffee shop. And you know what? There's a reason for that.

I resisted trying Santal 33 for the longest time because of the hype. I figured anything that popular couldn't be that special. When I finally gave it a real chance — wearing it for a full day instead of a quick test strip — I understood. This fragrance has something that most scents don't: genuine character.

Love it or hate it, Santal 33 deserves an honest conversation. So let's have one.

What Does It Smell Like?

If you've never smelled Santal 33, let me prepare you: it doesn't smell like what you'd expect from something called "Santal." Most people hear sandalwood and think creamy, smooth, maybe a little sweet. Santal 33 said "nah" to all of that.

The opening hits you with this incredible leathery, slightly smoky quality. There's cardamom and iris in there that gives it a dry, almost papyrus-like feel. And then comes the famous note that divides people: some call it pickles, some call it dill. It's actually a combination of the violet accord and the Australian sandalwood creating this briny, green, slightly savory quality that's unlike anything else.

Once you get past the initial "wait, what IS that?" moment, the heart reveals itself. Creamy sandalwood starts blending with the leather and cedarwood, creating this warm, lived-in quality. It smells like a worn leather jacket draped over a sandalwood bench in a dusty cabin. Weirdly specific, but that's exactly what it is.

The dry down is where non-believers become converts. It settles into this gorgeous, musky, slightly sweet sandalwood-amber base that just feels like YOUR skin but elevated. It's intimate, warm, and completely addictive.

Performance

Performance is honestly one of Santal 33's strong suits, which is surprising for a fragrance that smells so "natural." You're getting 8-10 hours on skin easily. I've worn this and caught it on my clothes the next day.

Projection is moderate — it's not going to announce your arrival from across the room, but within conversational distance, people WILL notice. And they will ask what you're wearing. This is one of the most complimented fragrances I've ever worn, specifically because it's intriguing. People want to lean in.

Sillage is about a 6/10. It creates a personal bubble of scent rather than a massive trail. For this type of fragrance, that's perfect.

When to Wear It

Here's the beautiful thing about Santal 33: it's a true year-round fragrance. Fall and winter are where it feels most at home, with the leather and sandalwood getting cozy in cooler air. But it also works in spring and even summer evenings.

It's equally at home in a business meeting as it is at a gallery opening or a chill dinner date. The versatility is genuinely impressive. Day, night, casual, formal — Santal 33 doesn't care. It works.

The only scenario where I'd say it's not ideal is high heat daytime situations. In 90+ degree weather, the opening can get a bit aggressive and the savory notes amplify in a way that's not always flattering.

The Downsides – Let's Be Real

  • The "pickle" factor. I can't sugarcoat this. Some people spray Santal 33 and genuinely get pickle juice or dill. If that's what your nose picks up, no amount of "just wait for the dry down" is going to save it for you. Test before you buy.
  • It's everywhere. Especially in major cities. If individuality is important to you, wearing the unofficial scent of NYC might bother you. You WILL smell someone else wearing it at some point.
  • Price is steep. Le Labo isn't cheap, and Santal 33 is no exception. For a fragrance this common, paying premium niche prices can feel wrong.
  • Overhyped expectations. If you go in expecting the greatest fragrance ever made because of the hype, you might be disappointed. It's excellent, but the mythology around it can set unrealistic expectations.

Buy or Skip?

Try before you buy — that's my number one piece of advice with Santal 33. This is one of those "your skin chemistry matters" fragrances. On some people, it's absolutely magical. On others, it's pickles and confusion.

If it works with your chemistry? It's an easy buy. There's a reason this fragrance built a cult following. The sandalwood-leather-musk combination is timeless, the performance is excellent, and it genuinely smells like nothing else in your collection.

Rating: 8/10

It's a modern classic for a reason. The composition is unique, the quality is there, and the performance delivers. Loses points for the ubiquity factor and the pickle controversy. But when Santal 33 works, it really works.
