The One EDP – The Fragrance Every Guy Should Own At Least Once
I don't say this lightly, but if I had to pick ONE fragrance for date night that works on basically every guy, in basically every situation, it would probably be The One EDP by Dolce & Gabbana.
This fragrance has been a community favorite for years, and unlike a lot of hyped fragrances, the reputation is deserved. The One EDP takes the original EDT formula — which was already excellent — and gives it the depth, warmth, and longevity it always needed.
But nothing is perfect. So let's talk about what makes it great AND what holds it back.
What Does It Smell Like?
Top notes: Grapefruit, coriander, basil
Mid notes: Ginger, cardamom, orange blossom
Base notes: Tobacco, amber, cedar, labdanum
The opening is warm spice meets citrus. The grapefruit gives a brief brightness that lasts maybe two minutes before the ginger and cardamom take over. It's spicy but not sharp — more like the warmth you get from a spiced chai than anything aggressive.
The heart is where The One EDP starts to sing. Orange blossom adds a soft, almost creamy sweetness that blends beautifully with the warm spices. It's smooth, inviting, and smells like the cologne equivalent of a warm hug.
The drydown is THE reason people love this fragrance. Tobacco, amber, and cedar create a warm, slightly sweet, masculine base that just sits beautifully on skin. It's not smoky tobacco — it's more like sweet, golden tobacco leaves dried in the sun. Mixed with the amber warmth, it creates something that smells inherently attractive.
Women love this scent. I've lost count of how many times someone has told me they got compliments wearing The One.
Performance – The EDP vs EDT Question
The EDP was created specifically to fix the biggest complaint about the original EDT: longevity. And it mostly succeeds. You're getting 6-8 hours of wear time, with moderate projection for the first 2-3 hours.
Is it a beast? No. The One EDP is an intimate fragrance by nature — it projects within about a 2-foot bubble, which is perfect for close encounters but won't fill a room. This is a "lean in close" scent, and that's by design.
The downside is that for an EDP, 6-8 hours still feels slightly underwhelming. Especially at the Dolce & Gabbana price point. You might want to carry a travel spray for reapplication on long nights out.
When Should You Wear It?
Fall and winter are ideal, but honestly, The One EDP works in spring too. It's not so heavy that warm weather kills it — the citrus and orange blossom keep it breathable. I'd say September through May, which is impressively versatile for a warm fragrance.
Date nights. Date nights. Date nights. I cannot stress this enough. If you are going on a date and you don't know what to wear, put on The One EDP. It's the safest bet in men's fragrance.
It also works for evening events, dinners with friends, and even the office if you're light on the trigger. One spray on the chest for work is plenty.
The Real Downsides
- Projection is weak for an EDP. The number one complaint, and it's valid. The One EDP sits close to the skin. If you need a fragrance that announces your presence, this isn't it. You're paying EDP price for EDT-level projection.
- Still not enough longevity. 6-8 hours from an EDP should be the minimum, not the ceiling. Some batches perform even worse. It's frustrating when niche EDPs half this price are lasting 10+ hours.
- It can smell generic. The warm-spicy-amber profile is pleasant but also safe. The One doesn't take risks. If you're looking for something that makes a statement or sparks conversation, this might feel too "nice" and nothing more.
- Price keeps creeping up. D&G has been steadily raising prices on The One, and at the current cost, you're approaching territory where niche options start competing. The value proposition isn't as strong as it used to be.
Buy or Skip?
Buy it if you don't already own a dedicated date night fragrance. The One EDP is the gold standard for close-encounter, romantic fragrances in the designer space. It smells expensive, it gets compliments, and it works on pretty much every skin type. If this is a gap in your collection, fill it.
Skip it if you need projection and longevity above all else. Also skip if you already own Valentino Uomo Intense or a similar warm-tobacco-amber fragrance — the lane is similar enough that both might feel redundant.
Final Rating: 8/10
The One EDP by D&G is a masterclass in how to make a warm, inviting, universally attractive fragrance. The tobacco-amber drydown is beautiful, the orange blossom heart is perfectly balanced, and it has earned its reputation as one of the best date night scents in the game. Weak projection and so-so longevity hold it back from true greatness, but within its lane, it's about as good as it gets.
Every collection needs a "The One." This might literally be it.
