Ultra Male is the fragrance that basically launched the whole "sweet fragrance for men" trend. Before everyone was bathing in vanilla and caramel, Ultra Male was out here turning heads at clubs with its unapologetic, fruity-sweet blast. Love it or hate it, this scent made an impact. But does it still hold up?
What Does Ultra Male Smell Like?
The opening is a punch of pear and black lavender that hits almost like a fruity candy. It's sweet, it's loud, and it grabs attention immediately. There's a bubblegum quality in the first few minutes that some people absolutely love and others find juvenile.
As it settles, you get a mix of cinnamon, mint, and a syrupy vanilla that takes over. The drydown is straight-up sweet vanilla, amber, and a hint of cashmeran wood that tries to give it some depth. It's basically a dessert in a bottle — and it doesn't apologize for it.
- Top notes: Pear, black lavender, mint, lemon, bergamot
- Heart notes: Cinnamon, sage, cumin
- Base notes: Vanilla, amber, cashmeran wood, cedar
Performance — How Long Does It Last?
Despite being labeled an EDT (which is technically an "Eau de Toilette Intense"), Ultra Male packs serious performance. Expect 8-10 hours of longevity and strong projection for the first 3-4 hours. This thing fills rooms. On clothing, it can last even longer.
Go easy — 3-4 sprays is plenty. Over-spray this and you'll give people headaches. Not even joking.
When Should You Wear It?
Clubbing. Night out with friends. That's Ultra Male's domain. This is a party fragrance, pure and simple. Fall and winter are the best seasons, though some guys rock it on cool spring nights too. Do NOT wear this to the office or any professional setting — you'll be "that guy." And summer? Forget about it. The sweetness becomes nauseating in heat.
The Downsides — Let's Be Real
- Way too sweet for many people: This is one of the sweetest mainstream men's fragrances out there. If you don't have a sweet tooth in fragrances, you'll hate this.
- Immature vibe: There's no getting around it — Ultra Male can smell a bit like a teenager sprayed up for prom. If you're over 30, this might feel like you're trying too hard.
- One-dimensional: It opens sweet and stays sweet. There's not a lot of development or nuance here. You know exactly what you're getting from start to finish.
- Reformulation concerns: The newer batches don't hit the same as the originals, according to a lot of the fragrance community. Performance has taken a hit in recent years.
- Overhyped by the YouTube community: This is one of those fragrances every YouTuber recommends, which means a LOT of people wear it. Don't expect to stand out.
Who Should Buy It vs. Who Should Skip It
Buy it if: You're in your teens or twenties and want a loud, attention-grabbing club scent. You love sweet fragrances. You want something with proven compliment-getting power.
Skip it if: You're looking for versatility — this is strictly a going-out-at-night scent. You prefer mature, woody, or fresh fragrances. You already own Le Male Elixir, which honestly does the sweet thing better.
How Does It Compare?
Compared to Le Male EDT, Ultra Male is like the rebellious younger brother who showed up to the family dinner in a flashy outfit. Original Le Male is more balanced and classic; Ultra Male is louder and sweeter. Against Elixir, Ultra Male is more playful while Elixir is more refined.
Rating: 7/10
Ultra Male was groundbreaking when it dropped, and it still smells good. But the fragrance world has moved on, and there are now dozens of sweet fragrances that do similar things with more depth. It's still a solid clubbing scent, but the lack of versatility and one-note sweetness keep it from being great in 2024.
