Zoologist Squid Extrait de Parfum — Full Review

Zoologist went DEEP with this one — literally. Squid is their take on the mysterious, pitch-black depths of the ocean, where giant squids lurk in total darkness. If that sounds like an odd concept for a fragrance, welcome to Zoologist. But here's the thing: this is genuinely one of the most interesting aquatic fragrances I've ever smelled. Let's dive in.

What Does Squid Smell Like?

The opening is inky, dark, and wet. There's an immediate salty, mineral quality mixed with something that smells like wet stone and black ink. It's not the bright, fresh aquatic you're used to from designer brands. This is the ocean at 3,000 feet — cold, pressurized, and alien.

As it develops, you get dark woods, ambergris, and a smoky quality that adds warmth to the deep-sea coldness. There's also a metallic, almost electric note that some describe as bioluminescence in fragrance form (whatever that means, but it actually tracks). The drydown is surprisingly wearable — a dark, salty, woody musk that's less "ocean creature" and more "mysterious person who smells incredible."

Key Notes Breakdown:

  • Top: Salt, ink, mineral notes
  • Heart: Ambergris, seaweed, dark marine accord
  • Base: Black musk, driftwood, smoke

Performance — Deep and Long-Lasting

This is an extrait and it performs like one. 10-12 hours easily, with a solid 5-6 hour projection window. The dark, dense nature of the scent means it has real presence. Two to three sprays and you're set for the entire day. This is one of the stronger performers in the Zoologist lineup.

When Should You Wear This?

  • Fall and winter evenings — the dark, moody character thrives in cooler weather
  • Art galleries, concerts, creative events
  • When you want to be the most interesting person in the room
  • Nighttime wear in general

This is absolutely NOT for summer barbecues, office environments (unless you work in a very creative field), or situations where you want to blend in. Squid demands attention.

The Real Downsides

  • It will confuse people — hand this to the average person and they won't know what to make of it. This is not a crowd-pleaser by any stretch.
  • The ink note can be off-putting — some people straight up think this smells like a ballpoint pen mixed with seawater. Not everyone's idea of a good time.
  • Very limited wearability — this is a statement piece, not a daily driver. You'll reach for it maybe once or twice a month at most.
  • The price tag for occasional wear — spending Zoologist extrait money on something you rarely wear is a tough sell.
  • It can read as "weird for the sake of being weird" — some fragrance heads feel Zoologist pushes concepts past the point of being enjoyable to wear.

Buy or Skip?

Squid is a masterpiece of conceptual perfumery. There is nothing else that smells like this. If you're the kind of person who collects fragrances as art and loves to push boundaries, this belongs in your collection. But if you're looking for something practical, wearable, and compliment-getting, this ain't it.

Definitely sample first. This is one of those love-it-or-hate-it fragrances with very little middle ground.

Rating: 8/10

A truly original fragrance that does something no other scent does. The dark, inky, deep-ocean concept is brilliantly executed, and the performance is excellent. The high rating reflects the artistry and uniqueness — but understand that this is niche in the truest sense. Not for everyone, but absolutely for someone.
